Oils, a hate and love story

Good Sunday My Sweets,

I have very fond memories of standing in my grandmother’s dining room and holding a hairdryer pointed at an oil painting I had to get done and hand in at art collage the next day.

I’m trying not to laugh because of how young and dumb I was but it goes without saying that patience was not one of my best things.

I was used to working in acrylic and I had no inkling of the real value of oils. We’d been told to use oils in the assignment but not HOW. (Ironically—hairdryer or not I got an A for that assignment.)

But I had decided I didn’t like oils and I never touched them again.

Until recently.

I’d been following a youtuber (HappyD Artist) who’s work I adore. She works in oils and I kept looking at her work and wondering if oils were really as bad as I remembered.

Perhaps I should try using them again and see what happened?

Another Youtuber (Lena Danya) gessos the pages of her sketchbook then works in her sketchbook with oils.

This, to me, is a brilliant idea. You can practice the medium in your sketchbook without having the pressure of a completed oil painting.

Watching Lena I learned to use a clean dry brush to blend between colors and this was intriguing as well.

So I got a set of low cost oils. I wasn’t going to buy the good stuff until I knew that my hate-affair with oils was well and truly over.

I got a bottle of Alkyd and some turps.

I chose to paint a character from the Evi Asher book series Eternals. One of my favorites. Poe, a vampire prince with more attitude and swagger than most.

I gessoed the page, transferred my drawing and set to work.

I was nervous at first but after reminding myself that it’s my sketchbook and not a wall piece, I relaxed and …

Oh. My. Giddy. Aunt!

I  LOVE oils. The blending is smooth and seamless (especially when using a little make-up brush as a mop brush)

oilpainting

I’ve only done a few layers, mainly because I’m cautious about ended up with mud but I’m hooked.

I didn’t realize how much time I spent fighting acrylics to blend until I used oils.

I don’t think I’ll be going back to acrylic painting in a hurry.

*wink* time to buy the good stuff.

Have a glorious Sunday, my sweets.

I post regular updates of the WIP on my instagram, so if you want to see how the painting progresses just follow me. Genevievep23
